ILVIE LITTLE UND DIE UNERSCHROCKENEN SEEFAHRERINNEN ILVIE LITTLE AND THE FEARLESS SAILORS

HEADLINE: Ilvie Little: New children’s book series celebrates girl power and diversity

IN BRIEF: Why do boys always have to be the children's book heroes? Is it really true that only beautiful, slim

princesses can hold young female readers’ attention? Aren't we missing a few female role models who can show our girls that we're strong, courageous, independent, and free? The new photo reading adventure series ILVIE LITTLE aims to close this gap.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

ILVIE LITTLE AND THE FEARLESS SAILORS - VOLUME I

Ilvie Little is curious, courageous, and an elf. An ex-elf, to be exact. She has had enough of the placid, comfortable land of the elves and decides one day to discover the big, wide world. With her true companion Theo, a gluttonous little monkey, she sets out down the road to the unknown.

...and she soon encounters an ancient secret: a lost treasure.

Together with her newfound friends, a ship’s cook and his grumpy dog, she follows the trail of this mysterious treasure. The colorful crew crosses the seas and gets to know foreign lands and cultures.

In the process, they demonstrate how they clear many hurdles from their path and show what little girls are really made of. Fearlessly and courageously, they overcome storms - and also their own fears.

A magical story for strong kids and kids who want to be strong. A fantastic, courage-inspiring book for reading aloud and by yourself.

The history of the book

The artist, director, and photographer Susanne Stemmer had enough of invincible male and brave female children’s book heroes. She created Ilvie Little, a very special female figure, who is strong, independent, courageous, and free. And this as a matter of course, without overemphasizing these qualities.

The friends who accompany Ilvie on her first adventure come from all parts of the world - they are dark- and light-skinned, they have special abilities and so-called “handicaps.”

- for that's just the way people are.

——

What Susanne Stemmer says:

“There are some very interesting studies by media researchers and large newspapers about the distribution of the sexes in children’s books and films. (e.g.: Maya Götz: Die Fernsehheld(innen) der Mädchen und Jungen, kopaed - Süddeutsche Zeitung: Rosa Bücher, Blaue Bücher).

Shockingly, they all say about the same thing: Male heroes are courageous and free, they command pirate ships, find treasures...and discover the world. Female heroes are good, nice, caring, and well-groomed - and usually their adventures end at the fence around the pony corral. If they are lucky and don’t get stuck at home or have to be rescued by princes... - and this has just bothered me for a long time. - For how are we supposed to achieve true equality if we continue to plant such clichés in our children's heads. Boys are like this - girls are like that?”

——

As an internationally active artist, Susanne Stemmer knows that it doesn’t pay to do anything halfway, so this restless photographer went ahead and created a whole world. So it wasn’t enough to publish the books in German and English in a publishing house she founded herself; she also designed and produced items including the superpower sweater and the lucky dress.

And, of course, the adventures are depicted in very special photo collages. This is how she captures the young (female) readers’ imaginations before they “connect the dots” on the Internet. For true role models are formed in one’s own imagination and they shine from inside and out.
